About

The Balfour Catchment Group is a collective of farmers in the Balfour area of Southland, New Zealand, encompassing a diverse range of farming sectors, including sheep, beef, dairy, deer, arable, and horticulture. The group is committed to improving water quality and environmental health within their catchment area. THRIVING SOUTHLAND One of their notable initiatives is the "Targeted Solutions to Balfour’s Environmental Challenges" project, which focuses on addressing elevated nitrate levels in the Balfour fan's groundwater. Collaborating with Land & Water Science, the group is developing a high-resolution soil map using radiometrics and digital terrain modeling. This project aims to equip land managers with science-backed tools to make informed decisions that reduce groundwater nitrate levels and manage episodic runoff, including sediment, phosphorus, and E. coli. THRIVING SOUTHLAND The group's efforts have been recognized with the Environmental Action in Water Quality Award at the Environment Southland Community Awards, highlighting their united approach and commitment to environmental stewardship.
